Website project management

Website project management

A successful website project requires more than great design and development - it needs clear direction, effective communication, and careful coordination.

You don't just need a project manager. You need someone who understands websites.

Building or improving a website is about much more than design and development. For the business, it can involve a significant investment of time, with multiple suppliers and stakeholders to coordinate, decisions to make, content to create, images to source, functionality to review and user testing to manage.

As a specialist website project manager, I understand all of these moving parts – because I understand websites as well as project management. I know what needs to happen behind the scenes, what different teams need from each other, where projects can get stuck and the risks that can cause delays or additional costs.

I provide a single point of coordination between you, your website agency, developers, designers, content teams and other suppliers. I can manage the project plan, keep tasks and decisions moving, identify risks, solve problems and make sure everyone knows what needs to happen and when.

Most importantly, I understand both sides of a website project – what your business needs from its website and what agencies and development teams need from you to deliver it successfully. This means I can bridge the gap between the two, taking the pressure off your team and helping your project progress smoothly from planning through to launch.

I can help with:

  • Website project planning and timelines

  • Requirements gathering and scope definition

  • Finding and managing design and development partners

  • Managing project risks, issues and dependencies

  • Coordinating designers, developers, content teams and suppliers

  • Progress tracking, milestones and deliverables

  • Stakeholder communication and reporting

  • Website content planning and organisation

  • Testing, quality assurance and user acceptance

  • Pre-launch planning and launch coordination

  • Problem solving and managing changes to scope

  • Post-launch reviews and ongoing development

Website project management experience

With more than 20 years' experience working across website and digital projects, I’ve planned and managed website projects for businesses and organisations of all sizes and across a wide range of sectors. From large public sector and education websites to fast-moving start-ups and growing businesses, I understand that every project comes with its own requirements, challenges and priorities.

My experience spans a broad range of website projects, including e-commerce websites selling health and beauty products, designer lighting and pilots’ equipment, as well as websites for businesses in property, food and drink, recruitment, law and many other sectors.

I’ve worked across projects from initial planning and requirements gathering through to development, testing and launch, coordinating teams, managing timelines and keeping clients informed throughout. I’m also experienced in identifying risks and finding practical solutions when things don’t go to plan.

Whether it’s a new website, a redevelopment, a migration or an ongoing programme of improvements, I bring a practical, organised approach to keeping projects moving. I’m comfortable managing competing priorities, solving problems and bringing the right people together to get things done.

When things don't go to plan, I don't just flag the problem – I help find the solution. Website projects inevitably involve changes, unexpected issues and competing priorities. I’m experienced at identifying risks early, working through problems with the people involved and finding practical solutions that keep the project moving without losing sight of the bigger picture.

A structured process

Every website project is different, but a clear process helps keep things organised, reduce risk and make sure everyone knows what needs to happen and when. Whether you're planning a completely new website, a redesign, a migration or a programme of ongoing development, I can manage the project from initial planning through to launch and beyond.

1. Understand & plan

The first step is understanding what you want your website to achieve and what the project needs to deliver. I'll work with you to establish your objectives, audiences, functionality, technical requirements, priorities and timescales.

I'll help turn these requirements into a clear project brief, identify key deliverables and dependencies, and make sure potential risks or challenges are considered early. Good planning at this stage helps create realistic expectations and gives everyone a clear understanding of what success looks like.

2. Find the right partners

If you don't already have a website agency or development partner, I can help you find the right one for your project.

I'll help you define what you need from an agency, identify potential suppliers, prepare information for the tender or quotation process and ask the questions that will help you make an informed decision. I can also help translate technical jargon, compare proposals and assess whether an agency's approach, experience and costs are right for your requirements.

The aim isn't simply to find an agency that can build a website, but the right partner for your business and your project.

3. Set the project up for success

Once your team is in place, I'll establish the framework for managing the project effectively.

This includes creating a detailed project plan and timeline, agreeing responsibilities, setting milestones and deadlines, establishing communication and approval processes, and making sure everyone understands what they need to deliver.

I'll also identify key dependencies, potential risks and decision points so that issues can be addressed before they have an impact on the project. This gives everyone a clear roadmap and helps keep the project moving from the outset.

4. Keep everything moving

This is where I take care of the day-to-day project management and keep all the moving parts connected.

I'll coordinate designers, developers, content teams and other suppliers, track progress against the agreed plan, manage actions and approvals, and keep stakeholders informed. I'll monitor deadlines and dependencies, flag risks and deal with issues as they arise.

Website projects rarely go completely to plan, so problem solving is an important part of my role. When something changes or an issue comes up, I'll work with the relevant people to understand the options, find a practical solution and keep the project moving wherever possible.

5. Test, prepare & launch

The final stages of a website project require careful planning and coordination. I'll help organise testing across functionality, content, devices and user journeys, making sure issues are identified, prioritised and resolved before launch.

I'll also manage the pre-launch checklist, coordinating outstanding tasks and approvals and making sure everyone knows what needs to happen and when. This can include content checks, redirects, analytics and tracking, SEO requirements, forms, integrations, backups and other technical considerations.

On launch day, I'll coordinate the relevant teams and monitor progress so that any unexpected issues can be identified and dealt with quickly. I'll also make sure the post-launch checks are completed so the website is properly handed over and ready to perform.

6. Keep improving after launch

Launching a website isn't the end of the project. Websites need ongoing attention as your business, technology and customer needs change.

I can continue to manage your website development schedule after launch, coordinating updates, improvements, maintenance and future projects. This gives you a consistent point of contact who understands your website, your priorities and how it was built.

Whether you need a few small improvements each month or support managing a larger programme of ongoing development, I can help keep things prioritised, organised and moving forward.
